A painted portrait is something deeply personal — a way of capturing not just a likeness, but something of the character, relationships and story of the people within it.

 

I welcome commissions for individual portraits, couples, families and other meaningful relationships. Every painting is created in oils and developed individually with you, from the first conversation through to the finished work.

Let's talk​

​

Every commission begins with a conversation. We'll talk about who the portrait is for, the feeling you'd like the painting to have, where it might eventually hang and any ideas you already have in mind.

​

You don't need to know exactly what you want at this stage. I'll work with you to develop the composition, scale and approach that will work best for your portrait.

​

Choosing the image

​

I work primarily from high-quality photographs. Whenever possible, I prefer to take the photographs myself. This gives us the opportunity to explore different compositions, expressions, lighting and poses together, and allows me to create reference images specifically with the finished painting in mind.

​

If you already have photographs you'd particularly like me to work from, I'm happy to discuss them with you. They need to be of sufficient quality and detail for me to create the portrait, so I'll ask to see the images before confirming the commission.

Size and number of people

​

The cost of a commission depends primarily on the size of the finished painting and the number of people included.

​

A single head-and-shoulders portrait can work beautifully at a relatively intimate scale, while portraits involving couples, families or several figures generally require a larger canvas to give each person enough presence and detail.

​

I'll help you choose an appropriate size based on the number of people, the composition and where you intend to display the finished painting.

Available in a range of sizes depending on the composition.

Two people

Usually requires a larger format to allow both sitters sufficient detail and presence.

​

Family or group portraits

Size and price are individually agreed depending on the number of people and complexity of the composition.

Creating your painting

​

Once we've agreed the composition and reference photographs, I'll begin work on the painting in my studio.

​

Portraits take time. I build each painting carefully, paying close attention to likeness, expression, colour, fabric and the small details that make the sitter recognisably themselves.

​

I'll keep you informed as the work progresses and arrange a final viewing when the portrait is complete, this is usually online.

​

Commission prices

​

Prices are based on the size of the painting and number of faces, with larger or more complex compositions priced individually.

​

Prices start at £500 for an original oil painting.

​
